There is no Fastboot or USB boot option in the BIOS, I can either change the boot device from the HDD to the DVD drive or to the USB drive.

This allows me to boot into my CentOS, Windows 10 and Windows 7 factory recovery partitions, but I don't see any way to boot into my USB and start using Puppy (actually I already selected this device (my USB drive) to boot into, but the Grub screen that appears suggest that my laptop boots into the HDD rather than my USB drive). So, I see the Grub boot screen that I always see ever since I successfully installed CentOS alongside my Windows 10 OS. The problem is when I restart my PC, set the boot option to boot from my Kingston DT 101 2.0 (which the BIOS successfully detected), it will load the Grub screen that is missing puppy Linux. I used Rufus to create a live bootable USB drive and here are the contents of the drive (I named my USB drive XenialPup64).

I might eventually install Windows 7 on another hard drive in the computer that is currently running Linux Mint (I decided to go with Mint not Puppy). I have a separate desktop for Linux and another for Windows 7. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 with Windows 7 prob about a year ago and it took me a week to get everything back to normal after deleting the Ubuntu partition and having to deal with GRUB. That can get messy - especially the day you want to get rid of the Linux. But in all cases stay away from a double boot with Linux. I run Ubuntu since years in Virtual Box and that works very well. Those will be completely independent installations that do not know each other - thus BIOS switching.Īnother option is to run Linux in a virtual partition. If you install on one disk with the other disk unplugged, it does not matter in which sequence you go about it. If you want to dual boot between disks, you should do what Rick said. You're storing puppy linux on your windows HDD, but all of your customisations and files on the other drive.

However, this isn't really a dual boot across two disks. If you're installing them each individually, it shouldn't matter which you install first. Which OS should I install first or does it not matter? Run (2) hard drives and boot each O/S using the Bios. Once you have downloaded your desired distribution and used it to create a boot disc, then use the latter to boot your new PC (-or indeed, you can use a surrogate PC without harming it).
